Oxycontin, A Nightmare Waiting To Happen?

My Oxycontin Legacy

Patient K. Yeovil District Hospital

Patient K deserves a mention, though sadly he is no longer here to tell his tale. His relatives felt so strongly about the manner of his death within YDH, they have asked us to include his “voice”. Here is his horrifying story. Patient K was another elderly gentleman, who had suffered a stroke. He was left in a side room on his own, for, so his family believed, some peace and quiet. They were assured that he was being closely monitored, and any change in his condition, would be relayed to his wife and family expediently.

This did not occur, for when his daughter went in to visit him, as she had been doing each day, she found, to her horror, that he was dead!! She pressed the bell to call a nurse, and surprise surprise, there was no response. This lady had to physically leave her father, and go in search of a member of staff, only to find they were all gathered in the staffroom drinking coffee, with no one on the ward, and with no way of the patients contacting them, as they were simply, (sound familiar?) ignoring the call bells.

When this gentleman’s daughter tracked them down, and demanded the presence of a member of staff at her father’s bedside, a nurse begrudgingly complied, and duly accompanied the distraught daughter to the side room, where her father lay cold and stiff.

Yes, he had been dead that long, and no one had noticed!!!!! The nurse was horrified and guilty, but nothing could take away the fact that this poor old chap, had died alone and uncared for by members of “The caring profession”

This incident occurred some twenty years ago, but his family are haunted by it every day. Their beloved husband, father, and grandfather, dying in a cold sterile environment, where no member of staff even noticed, and coffee was a priority over the welfare of those they were paid to care for!!!

How shameful!!
